An RIA is an investment advisor who is registered with either the SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION (SEC) or the STATE in which he/she lives. An advisor is required to pass certain qualifying examinations, update his/her registration annually and be prepared for random audits from the appropriate authority.
